James Henry Millis, Sr.


  • 1923: Born
  • 1941: Enters Davidson College
  • 1941-45: Serves as a fighter pilot in World War II
  • 1947: Joins Adams-Millis Corp., company founded by his grandfather, J.H. Millis and J.H. Adams
  • 1953: Becomes president of the company.
  • 1989: Chairman of the James H. & Jesse E. Millis Foundation Inc.
  • 1991: Serves as chairman of the Bicentennial Campaign for the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
  • 2003: Endows the High Point YMCA funds to build an addition. Donates $1.5 million for a new High Point University sports center.
  • 2004: Moves entire $6.6 million in assets from the Millis Foundation to the High Point Community Foundation.
  • 2004: With longtime friend Bob Amos, agrees to be honorary co-chair of the $2.3 million campaign for Hospice of the Piedmont’s Hospice Home at High Point.
  • August 16, 2004: Dies

Member of the board of trustees at High Point College and the board of visitors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
